What a great place to come to be a part of an encaustic art show!
The Fabulon Gallery, 1017 Wappoo Road, Charleston, SC is the site of the all encaustic art exhibition, Wax Poetic, starting October 1 and running through November 19, 2017. I am so proud to tell you that my piece, Encaustic, has been selected to be a part!!
Encaustic; beeswax, damar resin, pigment, thread, Keurig coffee filters, wood shavings and chips, packing material, watercolor
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to speak with Susan, the gallery owner, about the extraordinary effort she and others in the Charleston area are making to educate the public on the revival and relevance of this historic art medium. Traditionally, encaustic painting uses beeswax, hardened by the additive of damar resin and colored with pigments, to paint and/or sculpt. Often other materials such as paper or ribbon are embedded into the wax as a collage. The sculptor and painter Jasper Johns is perhaps the most celebrated encaustic artist, using the hot wax as a stand alone art medium as well as a casting tool. Given some of the work Susan showed me yesterday that will be included in the show, THIS will be an incredible feast for the eye seeking that ‘something different’ and ‘something special’ in their choice of art! I do believe it would make Jasper Johns smile!
Today my trusty Velcro dog Luke, and I will be poking around the historic village to savor the culture of this sweet little city. I love exploring! And I can’t wait to share other sites with you! How lucky am I to have this opportunity to follow my artwork around the world?!?!!? Yes, Jimmy Stewart, it IS a wonderful life!
